The Best Cheeseburger Sliders
Sweet and savory flavors unite in these handheld cheeseburger sliders on Hawaiian rolls. The beefy burgers contrast beautifully against the sweet rolls.
They reheat very well, so it’s great to make them ahead and enjoy them for a few days. Sometimes, I’ll just heat up one or two for a quick snack to hold me over.
The handheld size is perfect for kids and adults alike! There is something about tiny, cute food that makes it more appealing.
Burgers for a crowd save so much time compared to standing over a hot grill and flipping individual burgers.
Versatile and adaptable to your family’s preferred toppings!
Key Ingredients
Ground Beef – 80/20 ground beef is our preference for burger sliders, but you can choose a leaner variety if you prefer.
Hawaiian Rolls – King’s Hawaiian Rolls are the best choice. We like the sweet rolls but you can do the savory butter version if you prefer them less sweet.
Cheese – You can use your favorite cheese. I selected Colby Jack, but American cheese is amazing as well for that classic all-American burger taste.
Onions – I’ll saute these in a pan with butter while the burger meat is baking in the oven. They aren’t quite grilled onions but they are soft and buttery and blend in nicely with the burgers.
Pickles – Dill pickles add a good tang to offset the sweetness.
Butter – We’ll use a little butter in the onions and also on the Hawaiian rolls.
Easy Burger Sauce – you’ll need mayo, yellow mustard, ketchup, pickle juice, and ground cayenne pepper.
How to Make Hawaiian Roll Cheeseburger Sliders
Slice a pack of Hawaiian rolls horizontally. Place them cut side up, side-by-side, on a lined baking sheet. Melt 4 tablespoons of butter and use a basting brush to butter the inside of all the rolls. Broil in the oven for 3-4 minutes until golden brown (keeping an eye on them to prevent burning).
In a large mixing bowl, add the ground beef, along with the salt and cracked pepper. Mix well. Press the seasoned beef evenly into a 9×13 casserole dish. Bake in a 350-degree oven for 20 minutes.
While the beef is cooking, saute the onions in a pan over low heat with 1 tablespoon of butter until browned, about 15 minutes.
Once the beef is cooked, discard the pan juices.
Assemble the sliders: with the buns still on a baking pan, add a layer of pickles to the bottom of the toasted buns. Using two spatulas, carefully transfer the slab of beef to place it on the bottom buns. Top with a double layer of cheese. Then add the onions in an even layer and place the top buns back on.
Brush the top buns with 1 tablespoon of melted butter. If desired, top immediately with sesame seeds. Return to the oven for 15 more minutes or until the cheese has melted.
Cheeseburger Slider Variations
- Change up the toppings by adding bacon, tomatoes, pickled red onions, and more! Be sure to select toppings that will not wilt, and instead, just have lettuce available on the side to add to the burgers as you go.
- Use ground turkey or ground chicken instead of ground beef. Both work great for this recipe.
- Choose a different cheese option. Whether you add a kick of heat with pepper jack, add smokiness with gouda, or go all-American with Kraft Singles, you can make these your own.
Easy Burger Sauce for Sliders
These cheeseburger sliders are truly incomplete without a burger sauce for dipping. I’d go as far as to say it’s essential! My easy burger sauce is just 5 simple ingredients, and you likely have them in your kitchen now:
Mayo, Yellow Mustard, Ketchup, Pickle Juice, and Cayenne Pepper.
Mix these ingredients together in a bowl, and you’ll have an addictive burger sauce that everyone adores!
Tips for Making Hawaiian Roll Cheeseburger Sliders
- Use a meat thermometer to ensure the beef is cooked through at the thickest part.
- Bake the burger sliders uncovered. You may feel the urge to cover them to prevent browning, but this will trap moisture and make the buns sweat, resulting in sogginess.
- To account for the beef shrinking, I prefer to use a 10×15 pan when cooking the beef so it will reach edge to edge on the buns (or slightly over). But these are less common so a 9×13 will work just fine.
- When baking the finished sliders, rotate the pan halfway through. This will prevent them from browning in certain spots if your oven cooks unevenly (most do).
- Be sure to drain off the excess fat and liquid that the hamburger releases as it cooks. Otherwise, it can make the Hawaiian rolls soggy.
- Buttering and toasting the buns first is the best pro tip. Not only does it add a little crunch and salty-savory flavor, but it also helps prevent the buns from turning mushy.
- Apply the sesame seeds as soon as you brush on the butter, and they’ll stick better. However, it is normal for some of them to fall off when handled.
Can I Make these Ahead?
Yes! You can bake the beef, prep and assemble all the ingredients, cover well, and refrigerate. Then, bake them straight from the fridge. You may need a few extra minutes to ensure the cheese has melted fully.
To Reheat:
Cheeseburger sliders are one of our favorite leftovers to reheat because they come back to life perfectly. Just pop them in the microwave until warmed through, about 45 seconds.
Serving Suggestions
Hawaiian roll cheeseburger sliders are incredibly versatile! You can serve them as a delicious finger food appetizer at a party or enjoy them as a main course for dinner.
They pair well with French fries or sweet potato fries, creamy slow cooker macaroni and cheese, crack corn salad, the best street corn salad, bacon creamy dill pickle pasta salad, or just keep it simple with potato chips, fresh fruit, and salad.
