Behind This Cherry Limeade Recipe

Every summer I find myself craving something cold and refreshing that’s a little more exciting than lemonade. Cherry limeades have always been one of my favorite warm-weather drinks, especially when fresh cherries are in season and at their sweetest.

After making my Creamy Mango Lemonade, I started wondering what other fruit would pair beautifully with sweetened condensed milk. Cherries immediately came to mind, and after a few test batches, adding plenty of fresh lime completely transformed the drink. The tart citrus keeps it bright while the condensed milk creates an incredibly smooth, creamy finish.

The result is somewhere between a homemade limeade, a cherry agua fresca, and one of those nostalgic drive-in cherry limeades, but even fresher and made entirely with real fruit.

Tips From My Kitchen

  • Remove as much white pith as possible. The white center of the lime can add bitterness, so taking a few extra minutes to remove it makes a noticeable difference.
  • Adjust the water to your taste. I usually end up using about 1½ to 2 cups after straining, depending on how juicy the fruit is.
  • Strain for the smoothest texture. This removes the cherry skins and any small pieces of lime, creating a silky drink. If you prefer a more rustic texture, feel free to skip this step.
  • Serve over ice instead of storing with ice. Ice melts quickly and will dilute the limeade. It’s best to keep the pitcher chilled in the refrigerator and pour it over fresh ice when serving.

Ingredients You’ll Need & Why

Fresh Cherries – Fresh, ripe cherries provide natural sweetness and a vibrant cherry flavor that makes this drink taste far better than anything made with syrup.

Fresh Limes – Using both the zest and the fruit creates layers of bright citrus flavor. Removing the bitter white pith keeps the limeade tasting fresh instead of harsh.

Sweetened Condensed Milk – This is the secret ingredient that gives the drink its creamy texture while balancing the tartness of the cherries and limes.

Water – Clean, filtered water adjusts the consistency and lets you customize how bold or refreshing you want the finished drink. I don’t recommend tap water.

How to Make Cherry Limeade

Everything comes together quickly in the blender before being strained into a pitcher for an incredibly smooth and refreshing drink.

Prep the Cherries

Thoroughly wash the cherries. Then use a multi-cherry pitter tool to remove the seeds from the center.

Blend the Fruit

Add the pitted cherries, lime segments, lime zest, and 2 cups of water to a blender. Blend until the mixture is completely smooth and the fruit is fully broken down.

Strain the Mixture

Pour the blended mixture through a fine-mesh strainer into a large pitcher, pressing with the back of a spoon to extract as much liquid as possible. If you don’t mind a little texture from the fruit, you can skip this step.

Finish the Limeade

Whisk or stir in the sweetened condensed milk until completely incorporated.

Add another 1½ to 2 cups of water, stirring and tasting as you go until the limeade reaches your preferred sweetness and consistency.

Serve over glasses filled with ice and garnish with fresh cherries or lime slices if desired.

How to Serve & Store

Serve this Cherry Limeade ice cold over plenty of fresh ice. For parties, keep the pitcher refrigerated and let guests add ice to their individual glasses rather than adding it directly to the pitcher. This prevents the drink from becoming watered down as the ice melts.

Store leftovers covered in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Stir well before serving, as some natural separation may occur.

FAQ’s

Can I use frozen cherries?

Yes! Frozen cherries work well when fresh cherries aren’t in season. Let them thaw slightly before blending for the smoothest consistency.

Do I have to strain the drink?

No. Straining creates a smoother, more juice-like texture, but you can leave the fruit pulp in if you prefer a thicker drink.

Can I make Cherry Limeade ahead of time?

Absolutely. Because we aren’t using any lime pith in this recipe, you don’t have to worry about it getting bitter as it sits. It’s actually even better after chilling for a few hours. Just give it a quick stir before serving.

Can I make it dairy-free?

The sweetened condensed milk is what gives this drink its signature creamy texture. For a dairy-free version, you could experiment with sweetened condensed coconut milk, though it will add a more noticeable coconut flavor.

  • ice
  • fresh cherries optional
  • lime slices optional

Instructions

Blend the Fruit

  • Add the cherries, segmented limes, lime zest, and 2 cups of water to a blender. Blend until completely smooth.

  • Add 1½ to 2 cups additional water, stirring and tasting until the limeade reaches your preferred consistency.

Notes

Remove the white pith from the limes. It can make the drink taste bitter.
Adjust the water to your taste. The exact amount will depend on how juicy your fruit is and how concentrated you like your limeade.
Strain for a silky-smooth drink. Leaving the pulp creates a thicker, more rustic texture.
Don’t add ice directly to the pitcher. Serve over ice in individual glasses so the drink doesn’t become diluted as it sits.
