My parents were visiting us this weekend, and we spent time outside on the porch on these warm August days, reminiscing about the good old days of TGI Fridays and their great drinks. The idea of a frozen mudslide came to mind, and three blended batches later… the rest was history! It was that day I entered my frozen mudslide era, and I’ve found occasions to make these more times than I care to admit.

Why You’ll Love Frozen Mudslides

A typical Mudslide cocktail calls for Kahlua, Bailey’s Irish Cream, vodka, chocolate syrup, and heavy cream. In this recipe, we are swapping out the heavy cream and going all-in with vanilla ice cream. The result is a drinkable dessert cocktail that dreams are made of.

The only issue with these delicious boozy milkshakes is that they are so easy to drink (they seriously go down so easily) and so dangerously yummy that you will want to make them again and again.

Not only do they taste amazing, but the presentation of swirling the glass with chocolate syrup is so pretty, especially when serving these to guests.

Key Ingredients

Chocolate Syrup – select a quality chocolate sauce like Ghiradielli or Torani.

Irish Cream – Bailey’s or Five Farms are my preference. They are both creamy and sweet, featuring Irish whiskey, chocolate, cream, and sugar.

Kahlua – this coffee liquor is a must in mudslides but if you want a stronger espresso taste with less sweetness, I recommend swapping Kahlua for Borgetti espresso liquor instead.

Vodka – grab a decent quality vodka like Tito’s or similar.

Vanilla Ice Cream – Select a high-quality vanilla ice cream (such as Tillamook or Blue Bell), as the product you choose will impact the final taste of this drink.

Ice – not really a recipe ingredient, but good to mention in case you want to add a bag of ice to your shopping list.

How to Make a Frozen Mudslide

Since we are making frozen drinks, I like to have everything ready so that when it’s time to serve, the drinks don’t melt.

Start by adding one tablespoon into the bottom of the glasses. Use a frother, dip into the chocolate syrup, and pulse it as you move up the glass to create chocolate lines about 1″ apart. Place the glasses in the freezer while prepping the mudslides.

Into a blender, add the chocolate syrup, vodka, Kahlua, and Baileys. Add in two cups of ice and the vanilla ice cream. Blend until smooth and creamy. Divide between two tall glasses, add whipped cream, and top with a cherry and chocolate shavings. Serve immediately.

What type of chocolate syrup should I use?

Let me be blunt: I do not like Hershey’s syrup for anything in the kitchen. I may be alone on this one, but it tastes cheapy-cheap and ick. They do have a Simply 5 version that may taste better, but I haven’t tried it.

When I am not making things from scratch, I prefer selecting ingredients that are higher quality because you can usually taste the difference. For this mudslide recipe, I opted for Ghirardelli (usually found in the coffee aisle), as I already had it on hand for my coffee station. Alternatively, Torani or Fox’s U-Bet is another excellent option, if you can find it.

How to drizzle a glass for a mudslide

This frother tool is the key to getting these perfect chocolate swirl lines running up the glass.

As seen in the photo instructions above, just squirt one tablespoon of chocolate syrup into the bottom of the glass, dip the frother in until it’s coated, then work up the glass in one-inch increments, pulsing the frother as you go. You will need to re-dip the frother in the chocolate a few times.

If you and your guests prefer stronger drinks, I do a heavy-handed pour on my shots, allow them to overflow as you pour.
