Well, not only do I not think we can ever have enough variations, but these crock pot cinnamon rolls serve a different purpose.
These are a bit less involved and great for a low-maintenance dump-and-go style of dining. You can add these to the Sunday buffet line for the family and people can just scoop themselves a portion.
Notes from Mal’s Kitchen
The worst part about making a delicious recipe is when it doesn’t turn out right (especially if you’re serving it to others or planning it for a special occasion). Well, I’ve tested this recipe many times in different crockpots and slow cookers, and I have some great tips to ensure this recipe is a success for you.
- Cooking times can vary based on slow cooker size. If you are using a small crockpot, the cinnamon rolls will stack in a higher layer and will require gentle stirring every ~45 minutes.
- 6-8 quart slow cookers are optimal. This size allows the cinnamon rolls to cook in a shallow layer, resulting in even cooking.
- Pillsbury brand is best. There are different canned cinnamon rolls on the market but I find that Pillsbury is tried and true.
- Test for sogginess. Be sure the cinnamon rolls are cooked through and no longer soggy or undercooked. Test in a few areas for doneness (especially at the thickest part).
Key Ingredients
Be sure to read through the full recipe card below for the detailed recipe with measurements.
2 cans of cinnamon rolls – prepared cinnamon roll dough is the way to go for this simple dump-and-go recipe.
Heavy cream – the base of the liquid mixture we pour over the cinnamon rolls in the crock pot.
Egg – just one egg is used for binding.
Brown Sugar – used in the apple mixture and the cream mixture.
Cinnamon – extra cinnamon is added kick up the coziness.
Apples – fresh apples, both sweet and tart are used.
Butter, cream cheese, powdered sugar – an easy homemade cream cheese drizzly frosting is made, but you are welcome to use the one provided in the cinnamon roll cans.
How to Make Slow Cooker Cinnamon Rolls
These crockpot cinnamon rolls are very easy to make, you can even add sliced apples for a fall twist.
In this recipe, I list instructions for making cream cheese frosting from scratch. You can opt to skip this step and use the frosting that comes in the can to save even more time.
Be sure to read through the full recipe card below for the detailed recipe with measurements.
Step 1: Prepare the Mixtures
Before getting started, prepare the cream cheese frosting (unless you decide to use the can of prepared frosting provided), and the heavy cream mixture.
Step 2: Assemble
Cut each of the cinnamon rolls into 4 equal-sized pieces. Adding them into a large crock pot in a single layer and pour over the heavy cream mixture.
Step 3: Slow Cook
Spoon the brown sugar filling evenly over each piece, cover and slow cook for 2-2.5 hours.
Varying Slow Cooking Times
This is important. The cook times for these crock pot cinnamon rolls vary drastically depending on the type of slow cooker you have. Crock Pot sizes can vary from 2-10 quarts (and beyond).
If you have a smaller slow cooker, the cinnamon roll layers will be thicker which can cause the cinnamon rolls on the bottom and sides cook faster (or even burn) before the middle and top cook through.
To fix this, you’ll need to cook these longer than two hours, and you’ll need to gently stir this mixture every ~30-45 minutes of so, folding the mixture so the top and middle can reach the bottom of the pan.
Continue to cook, checking on the mixture every 30-45 minutes until it’s cooked through without any raw dough. This may take 4-5 hours on low. Don’t be tempted to spike the temp to high in order to get a faster cook time. This will cause the cinnamon rolls to burn.
