Biscuit Dough Donuts with Peanut Butter & Chocolate Glaze

I am excited to share an easy recipe today for these Biscuit Dough Donuts with Peanut Butter and Chocolate Glaze! It’s not often that I make something for my blog that is simple, mainly because I have big ideas and love food so much that I don’t mind spending hours in the kitchen just for one delicious meal. But I know that’s not relatable to all my readers because we aren’t always in the mood to cook nor do we always have the time.

So today, I have a shortcut recipe that uses a fun and easy hack to make one of my favorite “cheat” foods – donuts! You may have made these before but this may also be new to some of you. Today, we are making biscuit dough donuts. Yup, canned Pillsbury buttermilk biscuit dough, fried for a few minutes, and frosted with delicious homemade glazes. As you may suspect, the frostings I decided to go with are peanut butter and chocolate!

What are biscuit dough donuts?

Premade biscuit dough can be found in the refrigerated section of your local supermarket. The most common brand is Pillsbury but any brand will work. With just one can of buttermilk biscuit dough and some hot oil, you can have the perfect warm donut fix! It tastes a little thicker than a yeast donut but it’s pretty darn similar and not much of a compromise considering the time you save not waiting hours for the yeast to rise.

These are so fun and easy to make with kids (as long as you do the frying part 😊). The ideas are endless, you can use your other frostings too like maple, classic glaze, chocolate glaze, or toss the hot donuts in cinnamon & sugar donuts or powdered sugar. You could also add a custard filling and make these Boston cream donuts.

Can I use any type of biscuit dough?

I recommend any of the following Pillsbury canned, refrigerated biscuits:

Traditional Grands!

Buttermilk Grands!

Flaky Layers

I would skip any of the flavored biscuits like Honey Butter, Hawaiian, Butter Tastin’, etc. so it stays as neutral as possible. I haven’t tried using frozen biscuit dough and would only recommend using the refrigerated canned dough for my recipe.

How to Make Biscuit Dough Donuts?

Instructions

  • Heat oil in a fry safe pot, deep skillet or deep fryer to 350 degrees.
  • Separate each biscuit dough and use your fingers to flatten each biscuit into thinner disks, trying to keep the perfect circular shape (they shrink down and thicken as they cook. If you don’t flatten, they will be too thick.)
  • Place a few donuts in the pan of hot oil, being careful not to crowd the pan. Fry until golden brown on one side, about 1-2 minutes, and then flip and fry until golden brown on the opposite side.
  • Remove and drain on a paper towel-lined plate for a moment, then transfer to a cooling rack to prevent from getting soggy. Repeat with the remaining donuts. While they cool slightly, glaze with peanut butter and chocolate glazes and serve immediately while still warm.

Ingredients

  • 1 can Pillsbury Grands Buttermilk Biscuits 16.3 oz can, 8 count
  • oil for frying
  • 1 Reese's Pieces, 9.9 oz bag

Peanut Butter Glaze

  • 1/2 cup peanut butter Jif preferred
  • 1.5 cups powdered sugar, sifted
  • 3-4 tablespoons milk
  • 1/2 tsp vanilla extract

Chocolate Donut Frosting

  • 4 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder, sifted
  • 1.5 cups powdered sugar, sifted
  • 2 tablespoons milk
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract

Instructions

  • Heat oil in a fry safe pot, deep skillet or deep fryer to 350 degrees.
  • Separate each biscuit dough and use your fingers to flatten each biscuit into thinner disks, trying to keep the perfect circular shape (they shrink down and thicken as they cook. If you don't flatten, they will be too thick.)
While they cool slightly, prepare the glazes.

Peanut Butter Glaze

  • In a medium bowl, whisk peanut butter until fluffy (or beat with a hand mixer)
  • Gradually add in 1 cup of powdered sugar, milk and vanilla. Beat until smooth and incorporated. Add remaining powdered sugar and whisk in until smooth. The texture should be slightly thick but easily spreadable.

Chocolate Donut Frosting

  • Sift together the sugar and cocoa powder in a medium bowl. Slowly stir in the milk and vanilla, a little at a time, to make a smooth, pourable glaze.
  • Add into a piping bag or zip top bag with the corner cut with a small opening for the glaze to be piped.

Frost the Donuts

  • Empty bag of Reece's Pieces into a medium bowl. Using a knife or offset spatula, frost the donuts with a few dollops of the peanut butter glaze. Dip each donut upside down into the Reece's Pieces to pack them onto the peanut butter.
  • Frost each donut with the chocolate glaze in a zigzag pattern and eat immediately. Donuts are best enjoyed fresh and warm.

Notes

Donuts should be sealed in an airtight container and leftovers are best enjoyed reheated for about 10 seconds in the microwave.
