This copycat version of the Starbucks Grilled Cheese Sandwich is a gooey sharp and tangy grilled cheese sandwiched between thick sourdough slices that are coated in a parmesan butter spread. Then it all comes together in a pan when it’s toasted up to melty perfection.
This is the Best Starbucks Grilled Cheese!
The Starbucks Grilled Cheese sandwich is one of the best items on their menu and it’s surprisingly delicious! (I say surprisingly because I’d never expect a coffee shop to produce an addictively yummy and quality grilled cheese sandwich.)
I first tried this sandwich on a whim with low expectations. My husband and I couldn’t believe how good it was. Buttery on the outside with a tangy and sharp flavor and a gooey texture. Hints of garlic, lots of parmesan and decadent butter.

Key Ingredients
In this copycat version of the starbucks grilled cheese sandwich, you only need a few ingredients. This will be your new favorite sandwich and frankly, it’s become our go-to grilled cheese we make.
Sourdough Bread – I grab a pre-sliced loaf at my grocery store bakery section. The sourdough adds the perfect tanginess to the sandwich.
Butter – we’ll spread our butter mixture onto both sides of the bread and it browns up perfectly.
Parmesan – freshly grated parmesan cheese is added to the softened butter
Garlic – use either garlic powder or a clove that’s grated finely. Choose the one depending on how much garlic flavor you want (fresh garlic being more intense garlic flavor).
Mozzarella – this adds a melty stringy, gooey texture while having a very mellow flavor.
Sharp White Cheddar – adds that sharp bite of cheese and the perfect melt.
How to Make Copycat Starbucks Grilled Cheese
This grilled cheese sandwich could not be easier to make. In just a few simple steps you can enjoy this tangy, toasty sandwich.
Make the Butter Spread
In a bowl, add the softened butter. Melt in the microwave about 10-15 seconds until it just starts to slightly melt. Add in the parmesan and garlic. Mix together until smooth.
Assemble Sandwich
To build the grilled cheese sandwich, spread the garlic parmesan butter on the outside of each piece of bread. Add in two slices of sharp cheddar and one slice of mozzarella cheese to the non-buttered side.
Grill The Sandwich
In a large nonstick skillet over low heat, add in the sandwich and cook about 5 minutes per side or until golden brown and toasted. Low and slow is key so the cheese melts before the bread browns too quickly. Remove the grilled cheese from the skillet, slice in half and enjoy immediately.
Copycat Starbucks Grilled Cheese Variations
You can really customize this grilled cheese sandwich and make it your own while still keeping the essence of what makes the Starbucks grilled cheese so unique.
Keep the same butter parmesan crust and sharp cheddar, but you can swap out the mozzarella for Gruyere or a nutty cheese.
Add in a protein like bacon, rotisserie chicken (or if you have leftover Loaf Pan Chicken use that!) or my husbands favorite, cooked lobster meat or even thinly sliced apples.
