Let’s make Hawaiian Roll French Toast that’s stuffed with a creamy cheesecake filling, rolled in cinnamon sugar and served up with caramel sauce for dipping.
Perfect for a Christmas brunch, Sunday mornings or any special occasion for a sweet indulgent breakfast treat. You’ve got to also try my Stuffed French Toast Bites, Crock Pot Cinnamon Rolls, Apple Pie Stuffed Cinnamon Rolls, French Toast Sandwich on Hawaiian Rolls, or my Easy Almond Croissants.
If you haven’t taken Hawaiian rolls and turned them into french toast, you are truly missing out. The sweet, tender rolls pair perfectly with the creamy egg batter and once they get toasted up in a buttery skillet it’s one of the greatest treats you can sink your teeth into.
In this version, I am stuffing these Hawaiian roll french toast bites with a sweet cream cheese filling and once you toss them in the batter it seals the edges, prevents the filling from spilling out as you cook them.
Cheesecake Stuffed Hawaiian Roll French Toast
These are perfect for a crowd! The assembly is super easy and you can cook them in just 1-2 batches (using a griddle is the easiest for big batch cooking).
Special occasion friendly – this is a french toast worthy of remembering. It’s a recipe we decided to make a tradition for Christmas mornings because it’s extra special!
Hawaiian Rolls make this recipe convenient and super delicious. Not only are the rolls sweet but they are also pillowy soft and tender resulting in phenomenal french toast.
Key Ingredients
Here is the simple ingredients you’ll need to make my cheesecake stuffed Hawaiian roll french toast:
King’s Hawaiian Rolls – or similar brand, but a 12-count pack of rolls is needed.
Butter – just enough to coat the pan when we are pan frying the french toasts.
Cheesecake Filling – a combination of softened cream cheese, powdered sugar, and vanilla extract.
French Toast Batter – heavy cream, eggs, sugar, vanilla, and cinnamon are whisked together for the batter.
Cinnamon-Sugar – a combination of granulated sugar and cinnamon for tossing the finished french toast bites.
Caramel Sauce – instead of syrup, we used a store-bought salted caramel sauce. Choose a good quality that’s preferably not corn syrup based. You can also opt for pancake syrup but I think caramel works better.
How to Make Cheesecake Stuffed Hawaiian Roll French Toast
Start by getting everything prepared so you can work quickly battering and cooking the french toast.
Combine sugar and cinnamon in a bowl, mix them together and set aside.
Make the Batter
In a pie dish (or shallow dish) add all of the batter ingredients. Whisk until smooth and set aside.
Make the Cheesecake Filling
Warm the softened cream cheese on a plate in the microwave in 15 second increments until it’s warm (but not hot). Transfer to a medium bowl.
Use a hand mixer or whisk to mix the cream cheese until smooth. Add in powdered sugar and vanilla and mix until it’s fully incorporated.
Assemble French Toast
Slice the Hawaiian rolls horizontally and set aside the top layer. Spread a thick layer of the cheesecake mixture from edge to edge on the bottom half of the buns. The batter soft of seals the edges so it shouldn’t melt out.
Add the top buns back on top then slice into 12 rolls. Get the butter added to a large skillet or griddle on low heat.
Set up the batter station next to the stove for ease. Work quickly for even cooking. Dunk each roll into the batter, coating on all side then place in the skillet.
Cook French Toast
Cook each side of the french toast about 1-2 minutes per side, being sure to rotate to cook all six sides.
Finish French Toast
Immediately toss the warm and buttery stuffed french toast into the cinnamon and sugar, tossing to evenly coat. Serve alongside caramel sauce for dipping or drizzling over the french toast.
Tips and Variations
Be sure to adequately heat your cream cheese so it blends smooth without leaving a bazillion small clumps.
Don’t slice your rolls into 12 pieces until after you add the filling. Otherwise, it’ll be more time consuming add filling to each individual roll.
Add fruit preserves to the top layer and cream cheese to the bottom layer. Then you’ll have a fruity cheesecake filling that will be absolutely delicious.
Add Strawberries or other fruit into the center cheesecake layer for a fruity twist.
Swap Cinnamon-Sugar for a powdered sugar dusting instead
Use Nutella and ditch the cheesecake filling (or use both of course, one on each side). Or just try this nutella stuffed french toast bites recipe.
